Christmas Favorites: Phil Wickman’s “Songs for Christmas”

My husband Paul introduced me to Phil Wickman. Paul has a pretty awesome job, touring Christian musicians throughout our beautiful country of Canada. It is rare, however, that I tag along. A brief window of opportunity became available last year, and I didn’t waste a minute to pack my overnight bag and head to Quebec City.

Phil opened each evening. Alone on stage with his guitar, every person was captivated from the first note. His voice — what a voice! This young husband, proud daddy, and genuine worshiper skillfully leads others to His King.

I didn’t have to think twice when Phil’s Christmas CD was released. I knew Songs for Christmas would be the first to be played in the Christmas season.

With ten tracks including seven well-known carols, two original songs, and a fun little instrumental prelude, Phil’s goal was to create something classic, yet unique — standing out from the thousands of other Christmas records.

As the CD begins, I can almost feel snowflakes dancing in the air, welcoming the childlike magic of Christmastime. Through varying styles and moods the classic carols play on. From folksy “Silent Night” to the soulful “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” you’ll find the wonder and amazement of this miraculous time of year quickly rekindled as you listen.

The first original song, “Christmas Time,” is a joyful bright new carol.

Sing for joy sing for joy every girl every boy
for the highest of kings has come down for you and me
to save our lives this Christmas time

“Evermore” is majestic, like a modern-day hymn; a powerful worship anthem to Jesus the Savior and King:

Evermore evermore, He shall reign forevermore
Humble King sovereign Lord, He shall reign forevermore

Phil did it. Both classic and unique, Songs for Christmas will standout in any collection of Christmas albums.

More than that for me, though, Phil’s brilliant voice brings memories of that little trip to Quebec and a heart eager to worship … leading me to our King in this glorious season.
